Jay-Z ft PRIZM – “Reminder” (Remix) Lyrics:
[Verse 1: Jay-Z]
all rhymers with Alzheimers line up please,
all mamis with mind freeze please line up please,
all bloggers with comments, please I come in peace,
lets see if we can kill your amnesia by the time I leave,
all mamis I whored before, vouch for me,
tell em bout the time on your mommas couch mami,
all hustlas who ever bought an eighth from me,
take this time out to set the record straight for me,
‘member me, silver bullet hard top mentally
they think I’m outta shape so I have to jog there memory,
think with indelible ink, I let the pen go,
verses permanently tattooed serve as mementos,
ah, I’m so mental, my track record speaks for itself,
I’m so instrumental, allow me to rekindle
lets all reminisce like Mary did,
i think i have to send you a reminder, here it is..
[Chorus]
Reminder, reminder,
I got it if you need it, a reminder
Reminder, reminder,
I think i better give you a reminder
Reminder, reminder,
I got it if you need it, a reminder
Reminder, reminder,
Cos I can give you a friendly reminder..
[Verse 2: PRIZM]
fate invited me, pain ignited me,
lit the flame inside and claimed another side of me,
a rap artist, with a slew of other talents -
i smash targets, through and through, to find the balance..
i run the scene with clarity, the King i dare to be,
compare it to the greatest – see the similarities?
so haters, run along merrily,
y’all parodies – apparently y’all scared of me..
Kayce Photography, straight monopoly,
i paved the way, i played the game the way it oughta be,
now look at all the sh*t i did without lookin,
imitators always tryna follow in my footprints,
jus pushin, my goodness -
i’m losin track of where i’m at and where i took this (Brooklyn)
only 23, but don’t you envy me,
this is my life – y’all should jus let it be..
[Chorus]
[Verse 3: Jay-Z]
do what i done without crying, and in the environment
and in which i did it in without dying my n*gga,
rap like I rap without lying and then tying both together like iron my n*gga,
write 16’s in between running 16 businesses,
all the while showing these young punks what the business is,
as if I’m gonna let you n*ggas style on me,
as if, now everybody senile on me,
go back to boonback, remember those button ups,
young Hov, tell them ordinary Joes button up,
I destroy your 4 point O’s
and Benz 500s and all points to Ohhhh,
now you n*ggas ‘memba me, tell me how could you forget,
back to Johnny’s album cover, red and blue Gucci sh*t,
ain’t nothing changed but the year it is,
I think I have to send you a reminder, here it is..
[Chorus]

i’m not nervous, or even remotely unsure of myself, very often.. last night at 4am or so, i was. i’d just heard a new track off from one of my favourite rappers.. soon as the short instrumental intro kicked in, i was hooked – to the point where i knew i had to write to the track.. this happens a couple times a month and i’ve even done a half-dozen dubplates/remixes for mixtapes and what not in the past, so it shouldn’t have been a big deal.. except..
this particular track comes off of an album that’s sure to debut at #1 and go down as either a classic, or close to.. the song also comes from the artist i regard as the most accomplished / best rapper of all time. in other words, off principle, this isn’t a track i should record to.. i figured i’d write a few bars to the track and leave it at that – expression. then a crazy thought hit me.. wouldn’t it be quite the personal challenge to see if i could come up with a verse that wasn’t completely out of place alongside an artist i so revered? if you know anything about me, you know what came next.
almost 12 hours later, i don’t hate what i wrote, or recorded.. i like it even, but i don’t know if i love it.. i don’t know if i don’t love it because how much i loved the original version of this track.. but more than anything, i can’t decide if remixing a track i pretty much knew i wouldn’t be able to improve on was a good idea. i know i probably wouldn’t have been as inspired to try and take this on if it hadn’t been for Eminem’s throwback ruthlessness on Drake’s new single. I also know Jay-Z’s flow on this song is unreal: the variation, syncopation and character he brings to the dramatic Timbaland beat immediately makes this one of my favourite Jigga songs to date, and that’s before we’ve even addressed his trademark wit and poignant lyrics on a relevant subject matter..
